Ely Place - Strange London
Ely Place is still a private Road, owned by the Crown, but within the City of London and is therefore exempt from the authority of the City's Mayor. It used to be part of the London palace of the Bishops of Ely in Cambridgeshire and so up to around 1920 if policing was needed, a policeman had to be sent from Cambridgeshire.
